For over two centuries, the topic of slave breeding has occupied a controversial place in the master narrative of American history. From nineteenth-century abolitionists to twentieth-century filmmakers and artists, Americans have debated whether slave owners deliberately and coercively manipulated the sexual practices and marital status of enslaved African Americans to reproduce new generations of slaves for profit.

In this bold and provocative book, historian Gregory Smithers investigates how African Americans have narrated, remembered, and represented slave-breeding practices. He argues that while social and economic historians have downplayed the significance of slave breeding, African Americans have refused to forget the violence and sexual coercion associated with the plantation South. By placing African American histories and memories of slave breeding within the larger context of America’s history of racial and gender discrimination, Smithers sheds much-needed light on African American collective memory, racialized perceptions of fragile black families, and the long history of racially motivated violence against men, women, and children of color.

This is one of the most necessary books I've ever read! Although it was excruciatingly painful to discover this part of my history as an African American male, nonetheless, it was cathartic and opened my eyes to the epigenetic fallout from being descendants of breed slaves. It also answered a lot of questions about how the plantation owners built vast amounts of wealth and the wealth inequity of today. I was so moved by the topic of this book that I invited the author, Gregory D. Smithers on my video talk show to discuss many of the deeper issues surrounding slave breeding.

It doesn't tell you much. Sometimes, my attention was completely enthralled, but other times, I was skimming through nothing. The parts that are good, are the direct quotes from actual slaves, also, talking about the movie Mandingo and the real history behind the movie and the breeding farm in Kentucky. But we are talking just a paragraph of the interesting stuff, here and there. It really doesn't give you any details, facts, descriptions or anything like that. I would love to read the books in its huge bibliography. As a matter of fact, I picked up Up From Slavery and was transfixed from the first word. Really, really lacks any specific details, big time!
Almost no detail of the Darwinian aims or results from the practices. And the spurious claims vis-á-vis sexual stereotypes weren't refuted (as could have easily been done by citing the well documented evidence of no difference in size of genitalia between the races). In fact those long held notions were merely repeated (without debunking) so as to reinforce them.
There was much good information however, and I'm glad I read it.
Excellent!!!
This part of United States History is not really told, but it is important because it explains why the African experience is unique and why there is so much self-hatred and why Africans were so despised and mistreated as inhuman even after the civil war.
A very much needed book. If slaves were considered like farm equipment or farm animals..... then the breeding of them was obviously a profit center and practice. Slaves were supposedly the price equivalent of a modern car, or a modern truck, a piece of machinery. They were expensive "assets" from the slave-holder's point of view. Thus, a book on this subject is much needed. My only reservation is that there does not seem to be much concrete information from what this author opines.
This book answered many questions I have acquired over the years. I think there needs to be a follow up book tying EPIGENETICS to the present day haredity problems created by the actions of the sponsors of slavery and especially slave breeding. We need more of this type of information available to the public. This also needs to be a historical read for every history class in America's schools, along with literature on the trail if tears.
Unpleasant history repels many readers. They want just romance in history, Moonlight and Magnolias. This book covers what most academic historians wish to ignore. Accurate. Well written.
